Scriptures on Wealth: 30+ Bible Verses on Wealth and a Seven-Rule Christian Framework for Stewardship

By The Solomon Wealth Code Editorial Team · Published · Updated · Reviewed for biblical and financial accuracy.

Thirty-plus central scriptures on wealth — Old Testament covenant promises, prophetic warnings, Wisdom literature, Jesus' teaching, and the apostolic epistles — organised under six headings (foundation, source, wisdom in acquisition, warnings, stewardship, eschatology) plus a seven-rule Christian framework that treats wealth as stewardship asset rather than soul-anchor.

"The blessing of the LORD makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it" — Proverbs 10:22. "But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth" — Deuteronomy 8:18. "Charge them who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches… to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share" — 1 Timothy 6:17-18. The Bible's teaching on wealth is more positive, more nuanced, and more demanding than the popular caricature. Scripture neither celebrates wealth as a sign of God's favour (prosperity gospel) nor condemns it as inherently evil (ascetic distortion); it places wealth under stewardship and measures every dollar by the use it is put to.

This guide collects 30+ central scriptures on wealth — Old Testament covenant promises, prophetic warnings, Wisdom literature, Jesus' teaching, and the apostolic epistles — and gives the Christian a working framework for wealth as stewardship asset, not soul-anchor.

Foundation — God owns it all

  • Psalm 24:1La-YHWH ha-arets u-meloah, tevel ve-yoshvei vah ("the earth is the LORD's, and the fullness thereof, the world, and those who dwell therein").
  • Psalm 50:10-12 — "for every beast of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills… for the world and its fullness are mine."
  • Haggai 2:8 — "the silver is mine, and the gold is mine, declares the LORD of hosts."
  • 1 Chronicles 29:11-14 — David's prayer: "all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours… both riches and honour come from you… for all things come from you, and of your own have we given you."

The biblical doctrine of wealth begins not with the believer's possession but with God's ownership. Every scripture on wealth that follows assumes this foundation. The Christian is not owner but steward (oikonomos, Luke 16:1-13).

The Source — God gives the power to get wealth

  • Deuteronomy 8:17-18 — Moses warns Israel before entering Canaan: do not say kochi ve-otsem yadi ʿasah li et-ha-chayil ha-zeh ("my power and the might of my hand have produced this wealth for me"). The verse is the antidote to self-attribution: God gives the power.
  • 1 Samuel 2:7 — "the LORD makes poor and makes rich; he brings low and he exalts."
  • Proverbs 10:22 — "the blessing of the LORD makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it." The blessing-given wealth carries no sting.
  • Ecclesiastes 5:19 — "everyone also to whom God has given wealth and possessions and power to enjoy them, and to accept his lot and rejoice in his toil — this is the gift of God."
  • James 1:17 — "every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights."

Wisdom — how wealth is rightly acquired

  • Proverbs 10:4 — "a slack hand causes poverty, but the hand of the diligent makes rich."
  • Proverbs 13:11 — "wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it." Patient compounding outperforms get-rich-quick.
  • Proverbs 14:23 — "in all toil there is profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty."
  • Proverbs 21:5 — "the plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty."
  • Proverbs 22:29 — "do you see a man skilful in his work? He will stand before kings."
  • Proverbs 24:27 — "prepare your work outside; get everything ready for yourself in the field, and after that build your house." Productive capacity before consumption capacity.
  • Proverbs 27:23-27 — "know well the condition of your flocks, and give attention to your herds, for riches do not last forever." Active stewardship-attention.
  • Ecclesiastes 11:1-2 — "cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days. Give a portion to seven, or even to eight." Diversification and long-term investment.

Warnings — how wealth corrupts

  • Proverbs 11:28 — "whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like a green leaf."
  • Proverbs 23:4-5 — "do not toil to acquire wealth; be discerning enough to desist. When your eyes light on it, it is gone, for suddenly it sprouts wings, flying like an eagle toward heaven."
  • Proverbs 28:20 — "a faithful man will abound with blessings, but whoever hastens to be rich will not go unpunished."
  • Ecclesiastes 5:10 — "he who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity."
  • Matthew 6:19-21 — "do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal."
  • Matthew 6:24 — "no one can serve two masters… you cannot serve God and mammon."
  • Mark 10:23-25 — "how difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!"
  • 1 Timothy 6:9-10 — "those who desire to be rich fall into temptation… the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils."
  • James 5:1-6 — "come now, you rich, weep and howl… your gold and silver have corroded." (See our corrupting wealth guide.)

Stewardship — how wealth is rightly used

  • Proverbs 3:9-10 — "honour the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty."
  • Proverbs 11:24-25 — "one gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want. Whoever brings blessing will be enriched."
  • Proverbs 19:17 — "whoever is generous to the poor lends to the LORD."
  • Proverbs 22:9 — "whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor."
  • Malachi 3:10 — "bring the full tithe into the storehouse… and thereby put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you."
  • Luke 12:33 — "sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail."
  • Acts 20:35 — Jesus' otherwise unrecorded saying: "it is more blessed to give than to receive."
  • 2 Corinthians 9:6-8 — "whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly… God loves a cheerful giver… God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work."
  • 1 Timothy 6:17-19 — Paul's instruction to the rich: not haughty, not setting hopes on uncertainty of riches, do good, rich in good works, generous, ready to share, storing eschatological treasure.

Eschatology — wealth and the final reckoning

  • Job 1:21 — "naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return."
  • Psalm 49:16-17 — "be not afraid when a man becomes rich… for when he dies he will carry nothing away; his glory will not go down after him."
  • 1 Timothy 6:7 — "for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world."
  • Luke 12:20 — "fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?" (Rich fool.)
  • Matthew 25:14-30 — the talents. Every wealth-steward will be examined.
  • 2 Corinthians 5:10 — "we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body."

A Christian framework for wealth in seven rules

  1. Ownership belongs to God. The first internal sentence about every dollar: "this is the LORD's." (Ps 24:1.)
  2. Wealth is earned through honest labour and wise diligence. Proverbs 10:4, 13:11, 21:5.
  3. Wealth is given by God, not produced by self. Deut 8:18. Self-attribution is the entry-vector for haughtiness.
  4. Wealth flows through generosity. 2 Cor 9:8, Prov 11:24-25. Stasis breeds corrosion.
  5. Wealth is not the security. Prov 11:28, 1 Tim 6:17. The LORD is the security; wealth is a tool.
  6. Wealth funds eschatological treasure. Matt 6:19-21, 1 Tim 6:19. The temporal is converted into the eternal through use.
  7. Wealth will be audited. Matt 25, 2 Cor 5:10. Every dollar accounted for at the bēma seat.
