The Greek word: oikonomos

Greek oikonomos (οἰκονόμος) — "household manager, steward". Is the New Testament's word for a trusted slave or freedman who managed the master's estate. The English word "economy" comes from oikonomia. Christians are God's oikonomoi. Household managers of his property. See 1 Cor 4:1-2; Titus 1:7; 1 Pet 4:10.

Time, talent, and treasure — the three currencies of stewardship

The phrase "time, talent, and treasure" is not a Bible verse, but it is a faithful three-fold summary of the resources Scripture commands stewards to manage. Each currency has its own anchor texts.

  • Time — Ephesians 5:15-16. "Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time (exagorazomenoi ton kairon), because the days are evil." The Greek exagorazō is a marketplace verb — "buy up, redeem." Time is a currency to be purchased back from waste. Cf. Ps 90:12 — "teach us to number our days, that we may get a heart of wisdom."
  • Talent — 1 Peter 4:10. "As each has received a gift (charisma), use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace." Spiritual gifts are administered, not owned. See also Rom 12:6-8 and 1 Cor 12 — the gifts exist for the body's edification, not the gift-holder's identity.
  • Treasure — Matthew 25:14-30. The parable of the talents (originally a unit of currency, ~20 years' wages) makes financial stewardship a kingdom litmus test. Active deployment is required; burial is condemned. The principle: God measures by faithfulness-in-proportion, not by absolute return.

All three currencies share the same metaphysics: they are entrusted, not owned (Ps 24:1); they will be audited (Luke 16:2 — "give an account of your stewardship"); and they are designed to be deployed for kingdom yield, not hoarded for personal accumulation.
