Scripture honors hard work as a creation ordinance, not a curse. From Genesis 2 (Adam tilling Eden before the Fall) to Colossians 3 ("whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord"), the Bible elevates labor as worship.
Laziness is repeatedly condemned. Diligence is repeatedly rewarded. This guide collects the 25 strongest verses on hard work, organized by theme, with theological notes and modern application.

Work is pre-Fall (a good gift)
- Genesis 2:15 — "The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it." Adam worked before the Fall. Work is a creation gift, not punishment.
- Genesis 2:2-3 — God himself worked (creation) and rested. Human work imitates divine activity.
- Exodus 20:9 — "Six days you shall labor." Embedded in the Ten Commandments, alongside Sabbath.
Diligence is rewarded
- Proverbs 10:4 — "A slack hand causes poverty, but the hand of the diligent makes rich."
- Proverbs 12:11 — "Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows worthless pursuits lacks sense."
- Proverbs 13:4 — "The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied."
- Proverbs 14:23 — "In all toil there is profit, but mere talk tends only to poverty."
- Proverbs 21:5 — "The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance." See Proverbs 21:5 Meaning.
- Proverbs 22:29 — "Do you see a man skillful in his work? He will stand before kings."
Laziness is condemned
- Proverbs 6:6-11 — "Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise."
- Proverbs 19:15 — "Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep, and an idle person will suffer hunger."
- Proverbs 24:30-34 — the field of the sluggard overgrown; poverty comes "like a robber."
- Ecclesiastes 10:18 — "Through sloth the roof sinks in, and through indolence the house leaks."
- 2 Thessalonians 3:10 — "If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat."
Work as worship (New Testament)
- Colossians 3:23-24 — "Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward."
- Ephesians 4:28 — "Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need."
- 1 Corinthians 10:31 — "Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God."
- 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 — "Aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands."
Work and provision
- 1 Timothy 5:8 — "If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever." See 1 Timothy 5:8 Meaning.
- Proverbs 31:13-19 — the eshet chayil works with willing hands.
- Genesis 3:19 — "By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread." Post-Fall, work is harder, but still essential.
The Greek word: kopiaō
Greek kopiaō (κοπιάω). Used by Paul of his ministry labor (1 Cor 15:10; Col 1:29). Means "to grow weary, to toil to exhaustion." Christian work ethic embraces effort, not minimum-effort coasting. Yet it is balanced by Sabbath: God commands rest as well as labor. See Sabbath Year Finances.
Application: building a biblical work ethic
- Show up early, deliver excellent work, and serve customers as if Christ were the customer.
- Pursue skill (Prov 22:29) — invest in becoming excellent at your craft.
- Avoid idleness, gossip, and time theft at work.
- Work to give (Eph 4:28) — earn so you have something to share.
- Sabbath weekly — embedded with the work command (Ex 20:9-10).
