Work is older than the fall. Genesis 2:15 places Adam in the garden "to work it and keep it" before sin enters the story. Work is part of being made in God's image — God himself works (John 5:17).
This guide collects the major biblical work passages, explains the Hebrew and Greek vocabulary. Shows how Christians can recover a robust theology of work as worship, ministry. Stewardship. Not just paycheck.

The Hebrew word: avad
Hebrew avad (עָבַד) means both "to work" and "to worship/serve." The same verb describes Adam tending the garden (Genesis 2:15) and Israel serving God in the temple (Exodus 3:12). For the Hebrew mind, work and worship are not separate categories. Work done unto the Lord is worship.
Greek ergon (ἔργον, "work, deed") and kopiaō (κοπιάω, "to labor to weariness") frame the New Testament view: work is dignified, demanding, and meaningful — never beneath any believer.
Work is created good (pre-fall)
- Genesis 1:26-28 — humans created in God's image to "have dominion" — work is image-bearing.
- Genesis 2:15 — Adam placed in the garden "to work it and keep it" before the fall.
- John 5:17 — "My Father is working until now, and I am working." God himself works.
Work after the fall: harder, still good
- Genesis 3:17-19 — work becomes toilsome, but it remains commanded and good.
- Ecclesiastes 3:13 — "everyone should… take pleasure in all his toil — this is God's gift."
- Ecclesiastes 5:18-19 — "to enjoy his toil — this is the gift of God."
Work as commanded duty
- Exodus 20:9 — "Six days you shall labor, and do all your work."
- 2 Thessalonians 3:10 — "if anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat."
- 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 — "work with your hands… so that you may walk properly before outsiders."
- Proverbs 6:6-11 — the sluggard rebuked.
- Proverbs 10:4 — "the hand of the diligent makes rich."
- Proverbs 14:23 — "in all toil there is profit."
- 1 Timothy 5:8 — failure to provide is "worse than an unbeliever." See 1 Timothy 5:8 Meaning.
Work as worship
- Colossians 3:23-24 — "Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward."
- Ephesians 6:5-8 — slaves (employees) serve "as servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart."
- 1 Corinthians 10:31 — "whatever you do, do all to the glory of God."
- Romans 12:11 — "Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord."
Work and reward
- Proverbs 22:29 — "Do you see a man skillful in his work? He will stand before kings."
- Proverbs 12:11 — "Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread."
- Proverbs 13:11 — "whoever gathers little by little will increase it." See Proverbs 13:11 Meaning.
- Galatians 6:9 — "let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."
Work and rest
The same Bible that commands six days of work commands one day of rest (Exodus 20:8-11). Rest is not laziness. It is theology. Sabbath declares that your worth is not your output and that God. Not your effort. Sustains the world. Without sabbath, work becomes idolatry. With sabbath, work becomes worship.
How to work as a Christian
- Work as worship — every task done for God's glory.
- Work with excellence — Proverbs 22:29; Colossians 3:23.
- Work with integrity — honest hours, honest reporting, honest dealings.
- Work to provide — for self, family, and those in need.
- Work to give — Ephesians 4:28 — "labor… so that he may have something to share."
- Work and rest — sabbath is not optional.
- Work without idolatry — your job is not your identity (Galatians 3:26-29).
